life on the ship~same, same AND not really!
10 days into our 104 day voyage, it never ceases to amaze me how quickly human being adapts...and life on a ship is the same, same AND not really! Because I did not have internet for the past 2 days, and needing to get answers I could not get, I went about the day be-ing in my life on the ship. the day starts off with yoga at 0700 everyday followed by the class I am taking from 0800-0900(on A days). I usually will grab a piece of fruit on these days as I miss breakfast, which has not been a problem, just as long as I have my french pressed coffee in the morning! I then plan the day~including unexpected things that come up (same, same) into what I already have scheduled. I tend in the morning to write and prepare for my afternoon meetings with my ambassadors and included time today to meet with one of the Diplomats to talk about my thinking to do foreign service work after I retire!
From there, I head to my new morning workout with a small group of Life Long Learners who found each other by word of mouth doing P90X~for folks that have not heard about this workout, it is basic aerobic core work on drugs! VERY INTENSE and always moving~our small group took a before picture and our goal (although not a full 90 days) is to have an after picture that will knock your socks off~so I have included the before pic here! (same, same AND not really)
The afternoon is spent meeting with students, meeting with the dean to talk about dean duty (which Deb and I have been pulled in as back ups), a last minute dash to sign up for one service project in Africa with Randy & John and 30 minutes of quiet time in my room before the evening begins. During the end of dinner, on Bdays, I meet with our 2 students groups to talk about the Alumni Ball and Auction~a small but very powerful team is arising, which excites me to no end! We already have our theme and have brainstormed (without even asking folks yet) a list of 50 items for auction, including the idea of drawing an auction items for those who give to the alumni participation drive the 3 days before the auction! Really thrilled about the work I get to do this time on the ship~(same, same AND not really)
This evening, part of our Fall06ers had an intimate dining affair (something new they are doing for ANYONE on the ship)~so, Dwight, Jane, Debbie, Kelly and Mary and I got together to catch up and eat well~the chef and dining staff are amazing-some pics of the beautiful & delicious food they prepare and us after some yummy food & wine... the souffle, to die for!
chocolate souffle~delectable! |
dwight, jane, mary, moi, kelly & deb~fall 06ers rock! |
students at special dinner~Matt's birthday! |
Followed by our first open mic night for students~OMG, they never cease to amaze me~they are super talented and amazingly resilient~students bring so much richness to my life and although the same, it is really not the same~on the ship you get to witness the beginnings of community coming together that I don't necessarily get to experience in my job at home, not working directly with students in a freshman like setting!
I will attempt to attach a video of just one act so you can get a taste! I was moved to tears~same, same.
open mic night-all performers~amazing! |
I then wandered around the ship, sensing the energy in the space, where students, faculty and staff are starting to wake up to the magic of this amazing voyage of discovery....all this while sailing down the Amazon River and the ability to check off just one more dream on my bucket list of life~#103~check!...
same, same AND not really!
Tomorrow, Manaus and the Amazon, tomorrow Manaus/Amazon, tomorrow Manaus/Amazon!
